The
Significance of the Baby Buddha Shower and Being a Vegetarian
Rev.
Dayi said, “The yearly event organized by the temple over the past year had
received overwhelming support by the community at large. The magnitude of the
guest attendance, the size of the banquet and the celebration program had over
the year raised awareness to a notch higher each time. The popularity of the
event reflects and affirms the Buddhist life value of ‘no killing and liberty
for all life and the environmental co-existence’ is gradually gaining massive
recognition and support.”
Rev.
Dayi highlighted the significance that performing the act of giving shower to
the baby Buddha reciprocates in cleansing our tainted soul, further growth in
happiness and wisdom. When with pure heart, we raise the clean water to give
shower in bathing the icon of the baby Buddha, the acts performed by our body,
silent speech and thoughts help to rid us of our three poisons of greed, hate
and delusion. In return we are assured of receiving discipline, equanimity and
wisdom.
Discipline is a kind of human life practising value. The aim is to
control excessive greed. When we live our life instilled with this discipline,
our hearts start to incline towards goodness. The outcome brings about a
peaceful community.
The life value of being a casual vegetarian moving toward a frequent
vegetarian and eventually becoming a full time vegetarian not merely
underscores the goodness of our heart and the care for the co-existence of the
environment but also underscores the relentless expansion of our compassionate
heart which leads us down the path of receiving higher wisdom.
‘When pure is the heart so becomes also the purity of the land.’ This further makes clear the profound significance of the acts of showering the baby Buddha and being a vegetarian.”
